Shooters Hill Woodland at Wide Horizons Environment Centre, South London, UK. 30th July, 2015. Pictured: Boris cooks his own bread on a campfire with help from parents and their children. / The Mayor of London Boris Johnson joined children and local volunteers at the Wide Horizons Centre in Shooters Hill, a new outdoor learning centre created on a once derelict site by an army of volunteers. The visit marks the fact that the Mayor's Team London volunteering programme has smashed its target to reach 100,000 volunteers nine months early. A Team London grant enabled Wide Horizons to create the Shooters Hill Woodland on the previously neglected site, which had been used for fly-tipping. As a result of Team London support, this former no-go area is now an important green space in the city, with trees, birds, pathways, pond and other attractions and activities for young Londoners. The Mayor was shown first-hand how 700 volunteers, including schoolchildren, cleared and transformed the woodland, which is now used to deliver Adventure Learning activities to local schools, colleges and community groups. As well as the opportunity to explore and enjoy the outdoors, one of the aims is to stimulate schoolchildren's interest in a range of subjects from maths to English and science to geography. Team London is the Mayor of London's ambitious programme to mobilise an army of volunteers across the capital. The aim is to improve life in London through programmes that is hoped will reduce crime, increase opportunities for youth and improve quality of life by cleaning and greening London and building stronger neighbourhoods. // Lee Thomas, Flat 47a Park East Building, Bow Quarter, London, E3 2UT.
